BOLIVIA - ALVAREZ, Antonio Maria, Antonio de RIVERO, Juan Jose ALCON, and Manuel de LEON. A collection of 10 manuscript military plans for the campaign of general Jose Manuel de Goyeneche in Bolivia. [Bolivia: 20th April 1811 - 27th May 1812]. Ten manuscript maps on paper, ink and wash, various sizes from 215 x 310 to 485 x 595mm. (Some light creasing along old fold lines, 2 slightly shaved to margins, a few clean tears to folds). A FASCINATING SERIES OF MILITARY MAPS DOCUMENTING THE EARLY 19TH CENTURY UPRISINGS IN BOLIVIA drawn up by Spanish engineers under the command of the Bolivian born general of the Spanish forces, Jose Manuel Goyeneche. In 1808 Goyeneche was sent by Ferdinand VII of Spain to South America, to bring order to the dissention in Bolivia. Arriving in Buenos Aires he took control of Spanish troops and moving north to Lake Titicaca, defeated the insurgents of Castelli in June 1811 at the battle of Huaqui, at the southern end of Lake. The rebels (Castelli and his forces, mostly from Cochabamba) were camped along the lake shore near Desaguadero, and Goyeneche with a small force moved up from the south to surprise and defeat the rebel troops. In early 1812 the rebellion had spread to south to Potosi and Spanish troops under Brigadier Picoaga at Suipacha defeated the rebels at Nazareno, reclaiming the southern areas of the country. General Goyeneche was occupied in crushing the revolt at Cochabamba; leaving his base at Potosi he moved on Cochabamba, but was ambushed in the cerro de San Sebastian at the edge of the town. The revolt however was soon crushed. The maps are all carefully executed in a exact military style, most authorised with the cypher of Antonio Maria Alvarez, commander of the Corps of Surveyors.
