MERCATOR, Gerard (1512-1594) & Jodocus HONDIUS (1563-1611). Historia Mundi: or Mercator's Atlas. Containing his Cosmographicall Description of the Fabricke and Figure of the World... with new Mappes and Tables; By the studious industry of Iodocus Hondy. Englished by W.[ye] S.[altonstall]. London: printed by T.Cotes for Michael Sparke, 1635. 2° (290 x 187mm). Engraved emblematic additional title, 182 maps by Hondius, R.Hall, Peter van der Keere and J. van Loon including one duplicate and 3 maps pasted on at pp.299, 581 and 818, the map on p.818 folded. (Without Mm4 ?blank, neat marginal repairs to "The Meaning of the Frontispiece" leaf, additional title, Kk1 and Uuu4, single worm-track through lower margins of leaves to Ggg1 affecting a few of the larger maps; Q1 shaved with slight loss to map, Bbb1 holed and repaired with slight loss to map.) Modern brown morocco gilt by Zaehnsdorf, covers with a 'grid' formed from the repeated use of a small fleuron tool to form three horizontal and three vertical lines, the intersections marked with the armorial crest of the Pease family, the spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second, the others with a repeat pattern made up from the fleuron and 'Pease-crest' tool, gilt turn-ins, g.e. Provenance : Thomas Most (signature, marginalia); Robert Hare (signature). THE RARE FIRST PRINTING IN ENGLISH, first issue with a duplicate map of New Spain (Hhhh3 recto) in place of the later issued map of Virginia by Ralph Hall 'there is no Map for Virginia in regard there is a more exact Map drawing in that Country, whose Platforme is not yet come over, but when it comes, every buyer of the Booke shall have it given him gratis' (see errata on verso of final leaf), the verses on A2 verso are signed 'M.S'[parkes]. 141 of the maps are from Hondius's Atlas Minor , the remainder appear to have been engraved for the present work. STC 17824.5 (3 copies: 1 in U.K; 2 in U.S.A); cf. Phillips 451 & 4255 (later issues); cf. Sabin 47885 (variant imprint, incorrect map count).
