An entertaining letter in which Baudelaire teasingly suggests that his correspondent is using her illness to make herself interesting ('Je suis bien aise que vous souffriez un peu de temps en temps -- Passez par la fournaise, chacun y gagne'), asking her to give a message to the painter Edouard Manet and commenting on his temperament ('Quand vous verrez Manet, dites-lui ce que je vous dis, que la petite ou la grande fournaise, que la raillerie, que l'insulte, que l'injustice sont des choses excellentes ... Je sais bien qu'il aura quelque peine à comprendre ma théorie; les peintres veulent toujours des succès immédiats'), and ending with a description of a dinner at Madame Hugo's, and a triumphant put-down of a boring celebrity: 'ses deux fils m'ont vigoureusement sermonné ; mais j'ai fait le bon enfant, moi républicain avant eux, et je pensais en moi-même à une méchante gravure représentant Henri quatre à quatre pattes, portant ses enfants sur son dos ... Le célèbre Rogeard m'a fait, lui aussi, un sermon de deux heures ... à la fin duquel je lui ai simplement dit: "Monsieur vous sentez vous assez fort pour aimer un homme qui ne pense pas comme vous?" Le pauvre innocent en a été suffoqué!'. Eléonore Meurice, an intelligent and engaging woman whose husband was Victor Hugo's factotum, enjoyed a flirtation with Baudelaire, who borrowed money from Paul Meurice in 1859. She and Edouard Manet's wife showed him great kindness in his last illness. Baudelaire and Manet became friends in 1862 and Manet portrayed him in the Musique aux Tuileries . Published in the Correspondance , ed. C.Pichois and J.Ziegler (1973, vol. II, pages 500-501) from a copy printed in 1906 which omitted the name of [Auguste] Rogeard, the pamphleteer exiled to Brussels, and misread 'homme' as 'merdeux'.
