BAINES, Thomas (1822-1875). The Gold Regions of south eastern Africa, by the late Thomas Baines .. accompanied by a biographical sketch of the author. London & Cape Colony: White & Fawcett for Edward Stanford in London and J.W.C. Mackay in Port Elizabeth, 1877. 8° (220 x 140mm). Title with wood-engraved vignette of a beetle. Mounted photographic portrait frontispiece with facsimile signature on mount, folding sheet with 2 maps in poocket at rear, folding 4pp. lithographic facsimile letter, 3 mounted photographic plates from paintings by Baines, extra-illustrated with a photograph of Baines's memorial in Durban tipped onto front pastedown. (20mm. tear to foot of title, small tears to folding map sheet.) Original green cloth, blocked in black and gilt (hinges weak). Provenance : J. Ewing Ritchie (presentation inscription from Robert White dated Brighton 1891, pencilled inscription about White). FIRST EDITION OF THIS 'IMPORTANT WORK' (Mendelssohn). A presentation copy from the owner of the Baines pictures illustrated in the work - it is possible that he was also the publisher. Mendelssohn I, p.71.
