Chromolithographic frontispiece by Hanhart after Baines, 3 folding engraved maps with routes marked in colours by hand, 8 wood-engraved plates, numerous wood-engraved illustrations, all by G. Pearson after Baines. (Maps spotted, first gathering almost detached.) Original green cloth by Edmonds & Remnants, covers blocked in blind, spine in gilt (extremities slightly bumped). Provenance : M.J. Fielden (armorial bookplate). FIRST EDITION, ?later issue binding. Mendelssohn I,p.69. Thomas BAINES - The Transactions of the Linnean Society of London. Volume XXIV. Part the First. [On Welwitschia, a new Genus of Gnetaceae. By Joseph Dalton Hooker]. London: 1863. 4° (300 x 233mm). 14 lithographic plates, 2 hand-coloured, 3 tinted by hand by Walter Hood Fitch and others, after Baines and others. (Plate I and title slightly spotted.) Original blue wrappers (split to backstrip). The whole of part I of volume XXIV of the Transactions... is devoted to the discovery, naming and description of the 'Welwitschia mirabilis'. The plant was first bought to the attention of botanists by Frederick Welwitsch in 1860, and shortly afterwards Baines sent drawings and samples to Hooker at Kew. The first plate is a composite made up from one of Baines' drawings of the plant flowering in situ, and another drawing by F. da Costa Leal. Thomas BAINES An autgograph note, signed, [No place: no date], 1p., 12mo., 15 lines in ink. The note seems to have been written to accompany a botanical specimen: 'Blossom of the Great Tree Aloe Damara land - brought home by T Baines See Explorations in SW Africa . T Baines. Longman & Co or No 7. of Nature & Art Day & Son - the plant was supposed by Sir Wm J Hooker to be new as well as the Specimen of the Welwitschia Mirabilis of which I also sent home the first specimen & Drawing T.Baines' And four others by or on Baines ( The Gold Regions of south eastern Africa.
