Original blue wrappers (split to backstrip). The whole of part I of volume XXIV of the Transactions... is devoted to the discovery, naming and description of the 'Welwitschia mirabilis'. The plant was first bought to the attention of botanists by Frederick Welwitsch in 1860, and shortly afterwards Baines sent drawings and samples to Hooker at Kew. The first plate is a composite made up from one of Baines' drawings of the plant flowering in situ, and another drawing by F. da Costa Leal.
