Mounted albumen-print portrait frontispiece, 3 other mounted photographs after paintings by Baines, 4pp. folding lithographic facsimile of a letter from Livingstone to Baines, large folding lithographic map in rear pocket, numerous vignette illustrations, 52pp. advertisements at end. Original red/brown cloth, blocked in gilt and black (light scuffing to extremities). FIRST EDITION. Mendelssohn I, p.71. [ With :] Explorations in South-West Africa. Being an account of a journey in the years 1861 and 1862 from Walvisch Bay, on the western coast, to Lake Ngami and the Victoria Falls. Half-title, chromolithographic frontispiece, three folding engraved maps with routes and/or outlines hand-coloured, 8 wood-engraved plates, numerous illustrations. Original green cloth, blocked in gilt and blind (small neat repair to hole in front free endpaper). FIRST EDITION. Mendelssohn I, p.69. Good copies. Baines, as well as being an artist of note, was also one of the earliest pioneers of the area now known as Zimbabwe. The first work is particularly important and contains 'full information of every description upon the gold discoveries in Matabeleland and Mashonaland, with much curious knowledge of the inhabitants': Mendelssohn I, p.71.
