BAILLEUL, Nicolas. (Bailleul le Jeune). Mappe Monde dressàee sur les observations de l'Academie Royale des Sciences . Lyons: chez Daudet, 1752. Engraved double-hemisphere map of the world on two sheets, joined, overall 780 x 1040mm. Coastlines hand-coloured in outline, the map comprising a double-hemisphere world map with inset geographical texts in elaborate cartouches, with broad surrounds incorporating extensive geographical texts by continent, the whole within 'frame-style' border. (Map mounted on cloth and lightly browned, margins and parts of map surface rubbed with slight loss of surface, 4 rust holes.) Tacked to rollers on upper and lower margins. Nicolas Bailleul son of Gaspard the famous Paris geographer and engraver, first worked in Paris assisting his brother Francois in the engraving of a plan of Paris (1744). He then appears to have moved to Lyons where he is known to have produced maps of Savoy (1747), Languedoc (1753) and Europe (1778). This world map is not recorded in Tooley's dictionary or in the British Library map catalogue.
