Title: Autograph Document Signed (in French) as Judge - 1804 French land-holding in Attakapas District, with hand-drawn map Author: Potier, Fernand Victor Place: Attakapas District, Louisiana Territory Publisher: Date: November 12, 1804 Description: Autograph Document Signed (in French) as Judge. 3 pp. document, last page with hand-drawn map. 13x8". Untranslated, but appears to be a certification by the French district judge appointed by William Claiborne, first Governor of the newly-established American territory, of a land holding of Olivier D’Armeville near Lake Flamand (now called Spanish Lake), a map of which is drawn on the last page of the document. D’Armeville was apparently related to the Duclozel family (see preceding listing) and also to Olivier de Vezin Fagot, named in the document, a descendant of the French ironmaster who first established the levees of New Orleans. A very early territorial document, written less than a year after France officially transferred Louisiana to the United States. Lot Amendments Condition: Yellowed, with light edge wear; very good. Item number: 249996
