ATCHISON, David R. (1807-1886). Autograph document signed ("David R. Atchison"), 3 April 1841. 1 page, folio . AN AUTOGRAPH LEGAL DOCUMENT AND A PRESIDENTIAL TRIVIA QUESTION. A draft legal document, a Bill of Exceptions, in one of Atchison's cases: Rouse v. Dean. Born in the colorfully named Frogtown, Kentucky in 1807, David R. Atchison served two terms in the Senate and sided with the pro-slavery, Lecompton faction during the great "Bleeding Kansas" controversy in the 1850s. He was President Pro Tempore in March 1849 when Zachary Taylor and Millard Fillmore declined to take the oath of office on Sunday, March 4, waiting until the following, non-Sabaath day to be sworn in. Trivia buffs delight in identifying Atchison as the forgotten "12th President" who served for a single day, but he never took the oath of office.
