ANGAS, George Fife (1822-1886). The Kafirs Illustrated in a series of drawings taken among the Amazulu, Amaponda, and Amakoza tribes; also, portraits of the Hottentot, Malay, Fingo, and other races inhabiting Southern Afica: together with sketches of landscape scenery in the Zulu Country, Natal, and the Cape Colony. London: G. Barclay for J. Hogarth, 1849. 2° (536 x 365mm). Lithographic portrait frontispiece of the author, on india paper mounted, 30 tinted lithpographic plates after Angas, all finished by hand, drawn on stone by Angas, J. Needham A.Laby, B.W. Hawkins or W. Wing, printed by Charles Lovell, M. & N. Hanhart, Hullmandel & Walton, wood-engraved vignette illustrations, extra-illustrated with a loosely inserted copy of 'Original Sketches in Pen and Ink of Life and Scenery in the Colonies' after Angas, 4°, 4pp. lithographed thoroughout, issued as a supplement to 'The Colonies an India' for 4 August 1877. (Plates 8 and 30 spotted, slight spotting to plates 9, 12, 13, 16, 17, 23, 26 and 29.) Contemporary purple morocco gilt, covers elaborately panelled with fillets and wide stylised foliage roll, spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second and fourth, the others with repeat decoration of blank shaped central panels surrounded by shaped flower and foliage cornerpieces, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (joints rubbed, the lower slightly split, corners and extremities rubbed and bumped, foot of spine chipped). Provenance : Edward Smith Stanley, 13th Earl of Derby (Knowsley Hall, armorial bookplate, manuscript accession note). LORD DERBY'S COPY OF THIS IMPORTANT WORK, including outstanding portraits - particularly of the Zulus. The plates also include views of Cape Town, Hottentot Holland, Somerset West and Durban.
