Hanhart, Hullmandel & Walton, wood-engraved vignette illustrations, extra-illustrated with a loosely inserted copy of 'Original Sketches in Pen and Ink of Life and Scenery in the Colonies' after Angas, 4°, 4pp. lithographed thoroughout, issued as a supplement to 'The Colonies an India' for 4 August 1877. (Plates 8 and 30 spotted, slight spotting to plates 9, 12, 13, 16, 17, 23, 26 and 29.) Contemporary purple morocco gilt, covers elaborately panelled with fillets and wide stylised foliage roll, spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second and fourth, the others with repeat decoration of blank shaped central panels surrounded by shaped flower and foliage cornerpieces, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (joints rubbed, the lower slightly split, corners and extremities rubbed and bumped, foot of spine chipped). Provenance : Edward Smith Stanley, 13th Earl of Derby (Knowsley Hall, armorial bookplate, manuscript accession note).
