ANGAS, George French. The New Zealanders Illustrated . London: Thomas M'Lean, 1847. Folio (540 x 400 mm). Letterpress title-page, hand-colored lithographic title-page and letterpress descriptions of plates. 60 hand-colored lithographic plates after J. Giles and Angas, many heightened with gum arabic, tipped to guards and guarded throughout. (Some soft vertical handling creases.) Contemporary red half hard-grained morocco gilt, front cover with morocco lettering-piece gilt-lettered and -decorated (small split along front joint, inner hinges reinforced). FIRST EDITION, THE PLATES OF EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY. Angas was the son of George Fife Angas, one of the principal founders of South Australia. This is the first collected format originally issued in 10 separate parts in 1846 and 1847. It is a beautiful work with many fine and delicately drawn yet elaborate images of the Maori people, their environs, and cultural community. Relative to the rest of Oceania, New Zealand color plate books have been unrightly overlooked. This is one of the finest examples extant with many images of the highest artistic and technical merit -- "Extremely fine and important" Taylor. Abby Travel 589; Taylor p.152.
