ANGAS, George French (1822-1886). South Australia Illustrated. London: Thomas M'Lean, 1847.
ANGAS, George French (1822-1886). South Australia Illustrated. London: Thomas M'Lean, 1847. 2 o (538 x 365 mm). Hand-colored tinted lithographed title, letterpress title, lithographed dedication to Queen Adelaide, 2 page list of subscribers bound in at the end, 60 hand-colored tinted lithographed plates (mostly marginal staining to a few plates). Contemporary half calf and marbled boards (rebacked preserving original spine). FIRST EDITION. George Angas, son of George Fife Angas, one of the founders of South Australia, was born in Durham, and after studying drawing and lithography in London, went travelling; firstly to Malta and Sicily in 1841-42, and in 1843 to Australia, in 1844 to New Zealand, and later on his return to England he spent a year in South Africa. " South Australia Illustrated is without question Angas' greatest and most accomplished work. His views of towns and scenery, of the Aborigines and of the flora and fauna offer an outstanding -- if romantic -- interpretation of the Australian landscape. It is a rare book... and one that has always been held in high esteem. It must be considered one of the fundamental works in any collection of Australian plate books and no collection can be considered complete without it" (Wantrup). This work was originally issued in 10 parts. [ With ]: A copy of the facsimile. Artarmon, 1967. Number 890 of 1,000 copies. Abbey Travel 577; Colas 133; Ferguson IV 4458; Tooley 62; Wantrup 237. (2)
