Beschreibung:

Glacial Kame Culture, Late Archaic Period, 3000-500 B.C. Wood County, Ohio length 4-9/16 in. Made from polished green, banded slate; expertly sculpted with well-defined sharp lines and edges. The first known collector was Professor W.O. Emery whose birdstone collection was documented as far back as 1899, in Warren K. Moorehead’s Birdstone Ceremonial. It is probable that Emery’s interest in birdstones began during his time spent teaching chemistry at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Publications: Stone Ornaments of the North American Indian, Moorehead, Warren K., 1917, pg. 98, Fig. 76 Prehistoric American, Vol. 43, No. 4, 2009, (Birdstone Special Issue), pg. 38 Collection History: W.O. Emery, Washington, D.C. Dr. Stanley Copeland, Columbus, Ohio Jan Sorgenfrei, Findlay, Ohio Provenance: From the Collection of Jan Sorgenfrei, Findlay, Ohio Condition: Jan Sorgenfrei commented in Prehistoric American that this birdstone was “extremely crisp in manufacture”. This comment refers to the attention to detail the prehistoric artisan employed while creating this specimen.
