Beschreibung:

Glacial Kame Culture, Late Archaic Period, 3000-500 B.C. Ingham County, Michigan length 4.625 in. Slate with dense, highly contrasting bands; crisp, well-defined lines enhance the visual impact of this piece; neck and head are positioned at an unusually low angle. One can never fail to take notice of this elongated slate birdstone. The material is remarkable for the dense, highly contrasting bands. The neck and head are positioned at a very low angle, so low that the downward pointing head is nearly at the same level as the base, which is an unusual feature on birdstones. Also note the beautiful, triangular in cross section tail that nearly equals the height of the head. And finally, the crisp well-defined lines enhance the wonderful visual impact of this superior specimen. W. J. England collected this birdstone prior to 1954. It also had a long period of residence in the collection of Clemens Caldwell. Publications: Birdstones of the North American Indian, Townsend, Earl C. Jr., 1959, pg. 513-C Legends of Prehistoric Art, Vol. 2, Onken, 2011, pg. 539 Prehistoric American, Vol. 43, No. 4, 2009, (Birdstone Special Issue), pg. 36 and 81 (4 o’clock) Collection History: W.J. England, Caro, Michigan Karl Mills, St. Ignace, Michigan Clemens Caldwell, Danville, Kentucky, (Bi:115) James R. Johnston, Ohio Earl C. Townsend, Jr., Indianapolis, Indiana Jan Sorgenfrei, Findlay, Ohio Provenance: From the Collection of Jan Sorgenfrei, Findlay, Ohio
