Documentation album of face injuries of German soldiers during WWI. 1915. 24 vintage gelatin silver prints. Each circa 16 x 12 cm. Mounted to album pages in contemporary Jugendstil album (slight traces of use) with chord binding (26,5 x 20 cm). The album offered here is an exemplary collection of images showing the horrible injuries that many soldiers returned home with after World War I. As a result of the war plastic surgery took an enormous leap in development., especially in Germany. This rare album was most likely compiled by a surgeon in order to document the injuries as well as the healing process and success of the operations. Some of these images were certainly known to Otto Dix when he painted "Die Kriegskrüppel" (The War Cripples, see lot 4269 ). – Some slightly faded, most in very good condition.
