WILLIAM EWART GLADSTONE (1809-98) & OTHERS Autograph letter signed ("W Gladstone") to Mr. Ryan, 2 pages, 8vo, Balmoral, October [ca. 1863] Instructing him to "ask Mr. Cully if he can recollect whether he sent a copy of my Financial Statement of 1863 to Mr. Ferald. Please have ready for me in D[owning] St. any Schleswig Holstein papers that have been printed for Parlt. this year or last. You will see about the Queen's accident from my letter to Lord P." At the close of 1863 the Queen gave close attention to the struggle brought about the the conflicting claims of Germany and Denmark to the duchies of Schleswig-Holstein. Her sympathies were with Germany, but her ministers were with the Danes. In February 1864 hositilies broke out between Prussia and Austria against Denmark - the latter being promptly defeated. The Queen forced her government to remain neutral. With 11 autograph, typed and secretarial letters signed from George 4th Earl of Aberdeen, Herbert Henry Asquith, Clement Atlee, Arthur James Balfour, Henry Campbell-Bannerman, Neville Chamberlain, Edward Stanley 14th Earl of Derby, Lloyd George, Ramsay MacDonald and Lord Sidmouth.
