Beschreibung:

VECELLIO, Cesare (1530-1600). Habiti antici, et moderni di tutto il mondo . Venice: Giovanni Bernado Sessa, 1598. 8° (177 x 112mm). Text in Italian and Latin. Woodcut borders to title and fly-title. 506 full-page woodcut illustrations, the majority with woodcut borders and letterpress captions, woodcut printer's device within woodcut border on colophon, woodcut headbands, tailpieces and initials. (Occasional light spotting, some gatherings with offsetting of ink from text to illustrations and vice versa.) 19th-century crushed red morocco in a period style by Lortic, sides panelled in blind with gilt floral cornerpieces, central gilt strapwork lozenges with oval black morocco onlays, spine in compartments, lettered in gilt in 2, the others decorated with gilt fleurons, gilt turn-ins, edges gilt over marbling (extremities lightly rubbed, one corner bumped, short tear at foot of spine). SECOND, ENLARGED EDITION. 'OPERA DELLE MIGLIORI CHE SI CONOSCANO FRA LE ANTICHE DI QUESTO GENERE' (Cicognara). For this edition, the first edition (1590) was expanded by the addition of some 87 woodcuts, which include those in book XII 'De gli habiti del America'. In the third edition (Venice: 1664), the drawings from which the illustrations were cut are attributed to Titian, Vecellio's uncle; however, according to Brunet this belief is a 'tradition mal fondée', and Hiler considers it 'doubtful'. Instead, Hiler ascribes the drawings to Vecellio and the original 420 woodcuts of the 1590 edition to Vecellio's friend Christoforo Chreiger (or Guerra, fl.1572-1590), an opinion supported by Passavant, who cites textual evidence in the first edition ( Le Peintre-graveur , Leipzig: 1860-1864, I, p.151). Brunet V, 1104; Cicognara 1819; Colas 2977; Hiler p.873; Lipperheide Aa 34; Sabin 98732.
