Section titles, 140 hand-coloured engraved plates, most double-sided, engraved by J.N. Maag after ?Loibel. (Occasional offsetting or light unobtrusive browning, without portrait called for by Nissen.) Contemporary crimson straight-grained morocco gilt by C. Kalthoeber, with his ticket, with later Botfield arms, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (lower corners lightly rubbed and bumped). Provenance : bookseller's note, 'with the appendix, fine copy, 3.13.6' (pencil inscription on front endpaper). The third edition of Schaeffer's important work on insects which includes the additional 5 entries in the appendix. The text and plates are divided into 4 sections, describing the structure and appearance of insects, their classification and taxonomic groupings, and the instruments and methods used to study them. This copy is finely bound by Christian Samuel Kalthoeber, follower of John Baumgarten, 'who succeeded him as leader of the numerous German binders working in London in the second half of the eighteenth century' (Nixon, p. 172).
