"THE WORLD MAY BE SURE THAT WE WILL PROSECUTE THE WAR ON BOTH FRONTS," Truman states on the evening of his first day as President, "east and west, with all the vigor we possess to a successful conclusion." Just under three hours prior to this statement being released, Truman was summoned to the White House and told, by Eleanor Roosevelt, of FDR's death. "I felt like the moon, the stars, and all the planets had fallen on me," he told reporters. The Chief Justice swore him in shortly after 7 p.m. An hour later he issued this statement. The first decision he made as President--in keeping with the spirit of determination and continuity conveyed in this statement--was to affirm that the planned meeting of the United Nations in San Francisco in April would go ahead as planned. "It is what Roosevelt had wanted, and it had to take place if we were going to keep the peace." Ten years later, Truman justly takes pride in the course he set and followed in those trying days.
