TRUMAN, Harry S. Autograph letter signed ("Harry S. Truman"), as former President, TO DEAN ACHESON, Kansas City, MO, 19 January 1956. 2 pages, 4to, personal stationery . TRUMAN CLOSE TO "LITERALLY EXPLODING WHEN I READ THE SUGAR ON IKE AND ABOUT THE DECISIVENESS OF THE SNOLLYGOTTER WHO IS NOW SECRETARY OF STATE" "WHAT A WONDERFUL LETTER YOU SENT ME IN REPLY TO MY LETTER ON MENTAL PROSTITUTES," Truman tells Acheson. Three years into Eisenhower's term, Truman is furious at the adulatory treatment bestowed by the press on his successor, particularly in the realm of foreign policy. "The Snollygotter who is now Secretary of State," John Foster Dulles, was bring credited with every U.S. foreign policy achievement "since U.S. Grant and the Savior of you and me. Well to hell with all that. I wonder if Bobby Burns had John Foster in mind when he said a 'man's a man for a-that.' Reckon he did?" He thanks Acheson for an invite to the Alfalfa Club Dinner, hosted by Acheson, Edmund Burling, Jr., and John Lord O'Brian, "of whom I think most highly." As a son of the farm belt, Truman chides Acheson saying "I'd be willing to risk my front seat in Beelzebub's domain...that not one of those gentlemen knows where alfalfa comes from, what it is used for," but guesses they probably think it "is the basic commodity in either Scotch or Bourbon Whiskey!" Truman's correspondence with Acheson was an important safety valve in which he could privately blow off steam about the actions of his successor, instead of "exploding" to the press.
