Title: The Tale of Mr. Tod - Inscribed by Beatrix Potter Author: Potter, Beatrix Place: London and New York Publisher: Frederick Warne & Co. Date: [1912] Description: Illustrations by the author throughout. (16mo) original boards, lettered in green, pictorial label on front. Housed in a custom box with oval cut-out revealing cover illustration. Early reprint, inscribed on the front free endpaper "For a Brownie from Beatrix Potter 1914” (the date has been altered by Potter in ink). The recipient according to a note loosely inserted was Laura Meyer. Two old photos, one of three girls and one of a young woman in girl guide uniform, may depict the recipient. The Girl Guide Association was formed in 1910 and the Brownies division, for younger girls, originally called Rosebuds, was added in 1914. The date of the inscription may have been altered to match this founding date. Linder p. 429; Quinby 21. Lot Amendments Condition: Light wear, small start to front hinge; near fine.
