POTTER, BEATRIX. The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher. London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1906. Title vignette and 27 color illustrations. 12mo, original gilt-decorated brick-red cloth, upper cover with inset circular color pictorial label, g.e., color pictorial endpapers (Linder 2 & 3 [used twice]), some minor rubbing and soiling; a little shaken. FIRST EDITION IN DE-LUXE CLOTH BINDING, one of an unknown number bound in this deluxe binding published in either July or September, 1906. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY POTTER on the front free endpaper: "For Stephen Leech from Beatrix Potter Sept. 4th 20." Linder, p. 426; V & A 1601 (variant binding). Sir Stephen Leech (1864-1925) was the second son of John Leech and Eliza Leech. He was knighted in 1919, having served in the diplomatic service in Berlin, Cuba, Haiti, The Dominican Republic, Brussels, Constantinople, Peking, Rome, and Copenhagen. His father, John, was brother to Beatrix Potter's mother, hence Stephen was Beatrix's first cousin. This book was presented to him the year after his retirement when he had re-settled in England after his many years of foreign travels. A presentation copy of The Tale of Johnny Town-Mouse to Stephen Leech with the same date as this copy is V & A 1594.
