Early ownership stamp to titles and opening pages, else internally fine, shelf numbers penned to upper covers, some soiling, corners rubbed, chips and early repairs to head and tail of spine, an excellent set. SECOND ENGLISH EDITION, issued the same year and using the same sheets as the first; this edition without plates. Howes calls this account by the Methodist missionary an "unexcelled description of California's gold-rush days by a professional traveler and trained observer."
