"Quaderno escrito, y delineado por Don Marcos de las Roelas, y az, Jurado perpetuo del Cavildo, Justicia, y Regimiento dela muy Noble, y muy Leal Ciudad de Cordova, Maestro de los Serenissimos Senores Infantes hermanos del Rey Don Juan Quinto de Portugal, y Escritor General de todas formas de letras, êimbentor denuevos Rasgos, escrive Libros de Coro, Privilegios, y Executorias..." "Quaderno escrito, y delineado por Don Marcos de las Roelas, y az, Jurado perpetuo del Cavildo, Justicia, y Regimiento dela muy Noble, y muy Leal Ciudad de Cordova, Maestro de los Serenissimos Senores Infantes hermanos del Rey Don Juan Quinto de Portugal, y Escritor General de todas formas de letras, êimbentor denuevos Rasgos, escrive Libros de Coro, Privilegios, y Executorias..." Spain, 1722. 235 x 350 mm. Calligraphic manuscript on paper. Coat-of arms as frontispiece (margins renewed) and 43 leaves, each with calligraphic writing and decoration, in red and black. (Some soiling and spotting, section of each lower margin renewed sometimes affecting out area of text or image.) Late 19th-/early 20th-century green morocco. Provenance : purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 11 September 1963. Marcos de las Roelas y Paz was one of the outstanding Spanish calligraphers of the early 18th centuryl. He was admitted into the court of John V and was tutor of the "Infantes" Miguel and Joseph. Except for 5 leaves at the end which contain theoretical instructions on the art of calligraphy, each leaf shows (on the recto only) a different specimen of calligraphic writing in Spanish and Latin, as well as Hebrew and Greek alphabets. Almost every page is decorated with a pen-and-ink drawing, and subjects include saints, angels, birds, lions, a dog, plants, ships, a fisherman, views of cities and aprks, a large portrait of the Pope, portraits of St. Vincent Ferrer and St. Ignatius Loyola, to portraits of Spanish grandees in black and red calligraphic drawing, etc. There is also a full-page portrait of King Philip IV of Spain within an elaborate decorative and armorial frame partly heightened with color. Each page is signed by the calligrapher.
