Who's Who in Oz.
Chicago: Reilly & Lee, 1954. Illustrated by John R. Neill, Frank Kramer and “Dirk” [Dirk Gringhuis]. 4to (235 x 175 mm). Gilt decorated tan cloth. Condition : covers rubbed and spotted. Provenance : Dr. Henry Kolbe. This well-illustrated dictionary of oz characters from all 39 books was advertised as “the happiest Who’s Who ever published.” It was designed as a promotional gimmick for the entire series and much of it was rewritten in house when Snow failed to deliver a usable manuscript. As it was not a success, Reilly & Lee never reprinted it. Dr. Kolbe was an early member of The International Wizard of Oz Club, Inc. and asked 28 members to sign this copy at an early convention at Harry and Brenda Baum’s Ozcot Lodge in Bass Lake, Ind. Among the signers are the Baums, Martin Gardner, Russell P. MacFall, Dick Martin, Fred M. Meyer and the club’s founder Justin G. Schiller.
