SIMPLICIUS (ca. 500--after 533). Commentarii in quatuor Aristotelis libros de coelo. Venice: Aldine press, January 1526. -- Commentaria in tres libros Aristotelis de anima . Venice: Aldine press, June 1527. Together 2 volumes, 2 o (305 x 215 mm). Titles in Greek and Latin, prefaces and privileges in Latin, text in Greek. Large woodcut Aldine device on title-pages and on verso of last leaves. (Minor small losses on fore-margins of cc8, dd8 and ll4.) 16th-century French black calf, the covers with double-fillet panel in blind, gilt fleuron at corners, double gilt fleuron at center, notches for ties, edges stained red (rebacked, repairs to covers, gold of central ornaments possibly refurbished, lacking ties). ). Provenance: Fournery(?) (inscription on title ex Dono Domini Fournery , presumably a gift to:) -- the Jesuit College at Orléans (inscriptions on titles) -- Bibliothèque Municipale d' Orléans (inkstamp and duplicate deaccession inkstamps). A set of the two Aldine editions of commentaries on Aristotle by one of the most famous representatives of Neoplatonism in the 6th century. A student of Ammonius Hermiae at Alexandria, Simplicius wrote a number of exhaustive and influential commentaries on the works of Aristotle, including these on De anima and De coelo . Simplicius attempted to analyze a text and interpret it "in the light of the whole history of Greek philosophy" (DSB). In so doing, he aimed to reconcile Aristotle and Plato by reducing their differences to a matter of vocabulary or point of view. His works are also considered important for their inclusion of valuable fragments of pre-Socratic philosophical texts. Adams A-1785 ( De coelo only); Ahmanson-Murphy 208 ( De coelo only); Brunet V. 397-398; Renouard, 102.3, 104.5. [ With ]: AMMONIUS, Hermaes. "In Categorias Aristotelis Sebolia" [manuscript title]: extract from Commentaria librum peri Hermenias . [Venice: Aldus Manutius 17 October 1503]. 2 o (271 x 175 mm). Collation: AA-EE 8 ff 6. Text in Greek. (Some light marginal browning). 19th-century diced calf, gilt arms on covers. The text is one of two commentaries on Aristotle written by Ammonius. Cf. Adams A-989; Brunet I.238; Renouard 40.4. (3)
