Augsburg: Heinrich Steiner, 26 June 1536. 2 o (286 x 196 mm). Large title woodcut, 65 (of 66) woodcut illustrations by Schäufelein, Weiditz, and others, woodcut tail-pieces, several large historiated woodcut initials. (Lacks preliminary leaf b6 [containing the Epistle of Quintus Septimus to Q. Aradius on recto, and large woodcut of Dictys writing his history on verso], title-page and last leaf laid down, E3-E4 stained, E4 with lower corner patched, a few shoulder notes shaved, some browning and pale spotting.) 19th-century German marbled boards (joints and extremities worn). Provenance : Dr. Karl (?...mansdorff of Heidelberg (19th-century inscription on title-page, notations on endpapers); Ernst Anspach (bookplate). First edition in German of the two standard sources for the Troy saga in the Middle Ages, first printed together in 1498 by Guilelmus Schonberger at Messina. Tatius' translation is dedicated to Hieronymus Fugger. The woodcuts were compiled from various sources. 19 were cut for the illustrated editions of Cicero and Petrarch, commissioned by Grimm and Wirsung in the early 1520s but not printed until 1531 and 1532 by Heinrich Steiner at Augsburg; formerly attributed to Hans Burgkmair they are now assigned to Hans Weiditz Six woodcuts are by Hans Schäufelein and were cut for the first edition of the Theuerdank (Nuremberg 1517).
