During preparations for his 1985 exhibition at DeLorenzo Gallery, New York, Mouille declared the present lot to be the only example in black and white. Mouille, who rarely abandoned the dark end of the spectrum, only painted his "black forms" white at the request of decorator Louis Sognot, with whom he exhibited the present lot at the 1958 Salon des arts ménagers, Paris.
