SCHILLER, Friedrich (1759-1805). Autograph letter signed (‘Schiller’) to [the Leipzig publisher Georg Göschen], Erfurt, 1 October 1791, one page, 4to (252 x 202mm ), docket (pencil annotations), with a transcription, tipped onto an album leaf. Provenance : from the autograph collection of Sir Francis Clare Ford (1828-1899). Schiller is setting off back to Jena immediately, and will send from there four new leaves (for his Geschichte des Dreyßigjährigen Kriegs ) which were not ready to send earlier; he expects to have achieved his objective by Wednesday, and to have brought Gustavus Adolphus as far as the Lech river (‘Biß Mittwoch denke ich das mir gesteckte Ziel erreicht, und unsern Gustav an den Lech gebracht wu haben’). With the exception of the immediate dispatch, this will add up to 9 leaves, or 47-48 sheets in all in manuscript, which will hardly make more than 6 printed leaves; and yet he is curious to see the first pages off the press (‘Schicken Sie mir doch die ersten Bogen, ich bin neugierig wie Sie es eingericht haben’). He concludes with good wishes, pleased to have left Erfurt healthier than he arrived, and optimistic for the future: ‘Ich reise gesünder von hier als ich hergekommen bin und hoffe das Beste von der Zukunft’. Nationalausgabe , vol. 26, no.80. The letter was first published in Grenzeboten. Ungedruckte Briefe Schiller's an seinen Verleger Göschen (Leipzig, 1870). In the event, Schiller's promises of further installments for his History of the Thirty Years' War were to be empty, and the pages sent before his departure from Erfurt were the last to be included in Göschen's Historische Calender , 1792.
