The collection includes the following letters and manuscripts : Domenico CIMAROSA (1749-1801). Letter signed ('V[ost]ro aff[ettuos]o Padre che vi ama Mimino') to his son Raffaelle, Venice, 3 January 1801, writing ten days before his death, describing the symptoms of his fatal intestinal inflammation, and ending pathetically 'Addio Raffaelle ... Addio Paolino - Addio Costanza ... Addio Ferd[inand]o -- Pregare Iddio per me', 2½ pages, folio ; Augustin Pyrame de CANDOLLE (1778-1841). Autograph manuscript signed, a review of a life of Linnaeus by L.A. Fée, 1832, a revised draft, 16 pages, 4to , in half-columns; CHARLES V (1500-1558), Holy Roman Emperor . Letter signed ('Yo El Rey') to a councillor in Naples, 19 November 1529, on the lifting of a penalty clause on some merchants, one page, folio ; Déodat de DOLOMIEU (1750-1801). Autograph letter signed to an unidentified recipient, Malta, 12 September 1784, 3 pages, 4to ; Horatio, Viscount NELSON (1758-1805). Autograph letter signed ('Nelson of the Nile') to the Chevalier Italinski, n.p., 28 March 1800, referring to Sir Sidney Smith half page, 4to ; and documents by signatories including Franz Josef I (letter signed to his brother Ludvig Viktor, 9 November 1908), Samuel Hahnemann (1835), François de L'Hospital, Nicolas Oudinot, Antoine Augustin Parmentier (1784) and Albert Thorvaldsen; together with letters or manuscripts moderately affected by damp with signatures of Saint Robert BELLARMINE (letter signed to the Grand Duke of Tuscany, 2 May 1609), Giovanni Battista BODONI (autograph letter in 3rd person, n.p.), George Gordon Lord BYRON (autograph letter signed to Giuseppe Alborghetti, Ravenna, 11 December 1820, one page, 8vo ), CATHERINE the Great (letter signed to the Empress Maria Theresa, 27 September 1776, announcing the marriage of her son, the future Tsar Paul, one page, folio ), CHARLES II of England (autograph letter signed, 1661), Giovanni PAISIELLO (music manuscript, a transcript of a work by Alessandro Scarlatti), as well as Emperors Charles VI, Charles VII and Ferdinand III, Philippe Egalité (apprising the Emperor of his father's death, 1785), Louis Gabriel Suchet and Voltaire (letter signed, 1766); the autographs most severely damaged include those of Ludovico ARIOSTO, John James AUDUBON Jean BERNOULLI, Giacomo LEOPARDI (autograph letter signed to Carlo Emmanuele de' Conti Muzzarelli, 2 April 1832, 2 pages, 8vo ), NAPOLEON I (autograph note signed to his sister Pauline, [c.1806]), Jean-Jacques ROUSSEAU (autograph letter, Môtiers, 1763, 4 pages, 8vo ), Friedrich von SCHILLER (autograph letter signed, Weimar, 12 May 1803, one page, 8vo ), Madame de STAËL (autograph letter signed, 26 May 1816), Torquato TASSO (autograph emendations to a madrigal), as well as Pierre Augereau, Vincenzo Bellini Humphry Davy (three letters in Italian), Geraud Duroc, Alfonso d'Este, Duke of Ferrara, Eugene de Savoie, Emperor Francis I, Frederick the Great, Carlo Goldoni (1762), Henri IV, Ercole II d'Este, J.F.W. Herschel, Alexander von Humboldt (5), Ioannis Kapodistrias, Pope Leo XII (2), Louis XIV, Louis XV, Louis XVI, Marie de Medicis, Cardinal Mazarin, Jacques Necker, Philip II, Joseph Poniatowski, Antonio Scarpa, Friedrich von Schlegel, Maria Teresa (four) and Alessandro Volta. The damaged remains of what was originally one of the great European autograph collections; the autographs of Michelangelo, St Ignatius Loyola and Liszt (lots 80-82) are from the same collection, much of which was severely affected by damp damage during war-time storage. Sold as a collection, not subject to return.
