(20 9/16 x 15 3/8in.), original blue bubble grain cloth, smooth spines gilt-lettered, worn, vol. 1 head of spine torn, most outer joints and inner hinges to vols. 2 and 4 splitting, lacking plates 81-92 of the Second Series, text leaf pp. 37-38 (vol. 1) and pl. I:17 detached, approximately 10 plates cracking along inner margins, a few short marginal tears, repaired tear just grazing two letters of caption of pl. II:48, plates I:25 and II:56 with abraded areas, upper margin of pl. II:57 cropped . 180 [of 192] chromolithographic plates, some finished by hand, most by Gustave Leutzsch or Joseph Mansell after Henry G. Moon, text in English, French and German.
