ROSS, John (1777-1856). A Voyage of Discovery, made under the orders of the Admiralty, in His Majesty's Ships Isabella and Alexander, for the Purpose of Exploring Baffin's Bay, and inquiring into the Probability of a North-West Passage . London: John Murray 1819. [With]: Narrative of a Second Voyage in search of a North-West Passage, and of a Residence in the Arctic Regions during the years 1829 [-] 1833. Including the Discovery of the Northern Magnetic Pole . [And]: Appendix to the Narrative . London: A.W. Webster, 1835. [And]: BRAITHWAITE, John. Supplement to Ross's Narrative . London: Chapman and Hall, 1835. [And]: ROSS, John. Explanation and Answer to Mr. John Braithwaite's Supplement . London: A.W. Webster, [1835]. A first edition set of Ross's voyages plus two rare pamphlets with original wrappers bound in. These are Ross's own accounts of his two major expeditions: searching for the Northwest Passage on the Isabella in 1818-1819 and returning on the Victory in 1829-1833. The pamphlets relate to controversy surrounding the boilers on the second voyage. The Victory was abandoned in May 1832, beset by ice. Ross and his party wintered at Fury Beach and were rescued by a whaler, Ross's old ship the Isabella . Ross attributed the failures largely to the shortcomings of the boilers supplied by Ericsson and Braithwaite, an experienced engineer who had designed the first practical steam fire engine. Ross's criticisms led to a series of vituperative exchanges between Braithwaite and Ross. Abbey Travel 634, 636; Arctic Bib. 2074, 14873, 14862, 14866; Hill 1488, 1490; Sabin 7360, 73370 (giving incorrect date), 73376, 73381; TPL 1152, 1808. Five works in three volumes, quarto (280 x 220mm). First voyage: Errata slip. 3 folding engraved maps; 25 plates including 14 hand-colored aquatints, a hand-colored engraving and several folding plates including strip views; 4 engraved tables, 3 of which are folding (some foxing to plates, chiefly to uncolored ones, some offsetting and foxing to text). Second voyage: 31 plates and maps, comprising: 5 maps and charts of which is one is printed in 2 colors, a folding engraved map partially hand-colored, and 25 plates of which 3 are color-printed mezzotints with touches of hand-coloring and 6 are hand-colored lithographs (foxing and offsetting, some short tears to large map). Bound into this copy is an inlaid printed subscriber's form for this edition, filled out for T.B. Saunders. Appendix: Steel engraved portrait frontispiece; 19 other plates of which 12 are hand-colored. Bound with the Supplement and Explanation .
