RHODE ISLAND - JAMES FRANKLIN IMPRINT] The Charter Granted by His Majesty King Charles the Second, to the Colony of Rhode Island, and Providence-Plantations, in America ... Acts and Laws of his Majesty's Colony of Rhode-Island... Newport: James Franklin, 1730. First edition. Later cloth with lettering labels. 11 1/4 x 6 1/2 inches (29 x 17.5 cm); [2], 12, [12], [2], 210 pp., plus a 1730-31 supplement extending the pagination to p. 243, followed by a large group of original blanks, a modern facsimile of the supplement bound in at end. The work with two title pages, the first bearing the signature of Samuel Freebody but torn with a large loss, the second possibly supplied, stamps, some ink notations to table, the separate title to Acts and Laws with a large tape repair, some spotting and toning but generally clean. The first charter of Rhode Island printed in the state and a very early Newport imprint from James Franklin, brother of Benjamin. The charter is known for its religious toleration and protection of the Indians. A scarce work, we find only one defective copy sold at auction recently and before that the Brinley copy in 1879. Evans 3346; Alden, Rhode Island 17. C The New York City Bar Association
