Noted Maryland lawyer Luther Martin was counsel for the other side, along with "a Mr. Hunter of Rhode Island...I mention all these circumstances, for the fireside only; because there they will be interesting..." -- MADISON, James. MADISON DOES BUSINESS WITH A FELLOW DRAUGHTSMAN OF THE CONSTITUTION in this note that also has him using the rarer form of his signature, using "Jr.": "I find that in consequence of a draught on the Treasury which I exchanged with Mr. Gou[verneu]r Morris for a bill on New York, that surplus of 30 Regular currency has passed into his hands. I have requested him to hand it over to you..." -- MONROE, James. MONROE GINGERLY SENDS A COMMAND TO A VOLATILE RIVAL, his Treasury Secretary, and recent failed Presidential contender. "...When your report is prepared I shall be glad to see it before you send it in to Congress...." The two men were barely on speaking terms by this point. Monroe and Crawford nearly came to blows a few months earlier over what Crawford saw as Monroe's slowness in putting through political appointments helpful to Crawford's presidential run. -- TAFT, William H.
