Pen that belonged to notable California jurist David Belden (1832-1888), who arrived in the Golden State in 1853, reading law at Marysville, and began practicing in Nevada City in 1855. Elected county judge in 1859, he rose in his profession, and eventually to the Superiod Court in San Jose. The provenance for the pen is on a label affixed to the box: Quill pen of Judge David Belden eminent early day jurust, 1853 to 1888, who used only this style of pen. Given to me by his niece Mrs. J.Q. Barry. Memo by Mrs. J.G. Jamieson."
