Le texte original de Ptolemée rédigé en grec ne nous est pas parvenu. La première version latine fût imprimée à Bâle en 1536, mais c'est cette première édition séparée qui est la plus appréciée. Elle est traduite de l'arabe par Commandino avec ses commentaires. La Planisphaerium concerne une projection stéréographique de la sphère céleste. Commandino inclua dans le traité de Ptolémée son étude sur la perspective donnant ici une des premières formulations mathématiques d'un procédé déjà appliqué par grand nombre d'artistes. The Greek text of this writing by Ptolemy on stereographic projection is lost, a Latin version appeared in Basel in 1536, but this is the first separate and best edition, translated from the Arabic and edited by Commandino with his commentary. The “Planisphaerium” concerns the stereographic projection of the celestial sphere: Commandino included in his work a study of perspective which represents one of the earliest mathematical formulations of a method already widely employed by artists.
