A collection of nine autograph letters and fragments, comprising two signed to Lady Williams, a fragment signed to Harriet Lee, an autograph letter to Gen. and Mrs. Leighton, two autograph letters to unnamed correspondents; with an autograph letter from A.L. Barry to Mrs. Piozzi.
Thursday Morn./ 11: July 1811 : Autograph letter signed “H:L:Piozzi” to Lady Williams. 1¼ pp. (183 x 110 mm). Condition : light creases. Provenance: Sotheby’s London, December 1985, lot 103, £300, Quaritch. Piozzi accepts an invitation, “I will make [my son] happy by obeying Your Ladyship’s kind Commands” . References to Dr. Cummings and “my Truant Salusbury”, Piozzi’s adopted son. [N.p.], 1818: Autograph letter signed “H:L.P” to Lady Williams. 2pp., folded sheet (170 x 185 mm), with integral address panel. Condition: remnants of wax seal, seal hole, edges frayed; the whole an addendum to a letter, torn away. Piozzi expresses relief at “the Termination of my Torments” , comparing a recent personal drama with Shakespeare’s comedy: “So ends the Play of Much ado about nothing…” [N.p., n.d.]: Autograph letter fragment signed to Harriet Lee, with a poem in French and Piozzi’s translation. 1 p. (140 x 222 mm). Condition : folds, edges torn away, remainder of red wax seal. Provenance: Stonehill, May 1991. “Mes Amis! quelle Bête!/ Un Bonnet sans Tête!/ Mes Amis quelle Machine!/ Un Arbre sans Racine.” Wednesday/ Feb: 26 , [1818?]: Autograph letter in the third person signed to Gen. and Mrs. Leighton. 1 p. (226 x 185 mm). Condition: traces of former mounting. Provenance : J. Wilson, August 1980. A short note in thanks for an invitation, saying she will call Monday next when her health will be improved: “[Mrs. Piozzi] has been more Ill than the dear General and Mrs. Leighton are aware of,…but flatters herself She is on the Recovery now…” [N.p., n.d.]: Autograph letter to an unnamed male correspondent at “No.13”. 1 p. (225 x 185 mm). Condition : ink stain not affecting text. Provenance : Bernard Quaritch, London. A brief note reporting on her health, “I write in Bed to tell you how the Pain is gone off… Betsy Jones thought I believe that the Man’s knock at the Door would cure me. but i was already safe.” Russell-Street Bath , 27 July 1819 [note on the verso]: Autograph letter to an unnamed correspondent at “No.7 Russell Street”, with a note from the recipient on the verso. 1½ pp., folded sheet (205 x 126 mm), with integral address panel. Condition: small tears at folds. Piozzi reports on her health, much improved, “I feel half ashamed of being so well my dear Sir--when Friends are so ill.” With a note on the verso, “…I wished Mrs. P many whims of this day--her Birthday 79!--” Little Ryder Street (No. 2)/ St: James’s , 4 July 1793: Autograph letter signed “[A.L.] Barry” to Mrs. Piozzi. 1¾ pp., folded sheet (230 x 185 mm), with integral address panel. Condition: red wax seal intact, seal hole, postmarks. Provenance: Sotheby’s London, December 1984, lot 61, £180, Quaritch. Col. Barry writes, “I have this moment received the enclosed from Lord Rawdon [a letter in praise of Piozzi] … Doubtless I ought Months ago to have given his Lordship the pleasure of seeing your Work, but somehow or other I had mislaid it…” [With]: Two autograph fragments, 4 March 1817 and n.p., n.d.
