PIOZZI, Hester Lynch Thrale (1741-1821). Autobiography, Letters and Literary Remains . London: Longman, Green, Longman and Roberts, 1861.
PIOZZI, Hester Lynch Thrale (1741-1821). Autobiography, Letters and Literary Remains . London: Longman, Green, Longman and Roberts, 1861. 2 volumes, 8° (185 x 117 mm). EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED by the addition of 101 plates, of which 20 in color, and an autograph letter signed by Piozzi. Brown crushed levant morocco gilt, spines gilt, edges gilt, by Bayntun for Charles Lauriat, Boston. A fine extra-illustrated copy, with an ALS by Piozzi bound in at front of volume one: to Mr. Lyons, Brynbella, 9 July 1798. Two pages, 8vo, separated along folds . Piozzi requests news from her old friend of London and discusses her mother's ancestral estate in Surrey. She mentions Hume and his news of Cardinal Wolsey who "returned to that seat when the King withdrew his favors from him." She asks how Hugh Walpole's works have been selling and ends with two paragraphs on Napoleon "the Mysterious Expedition of Buonaparte will I hope end at worst in revolutionizing the Greek Islands & restoring the old names to Peloponnopus, Euboaea, etc. I should be sorry he ever got to India, but waking the Turks from their long sleep will not grieve me... My husband is particularly disgusted with the people that exalt Buonaparte's personal courage and valourous deeds. He goes nowhere unless he is called says Mr. Piozzi.. I worship the French no more, unless they are still greater blunderers than even I take them for."
