ONE FAMILY OWNERSHIP FROM NEW 1960 ROLLS-ROYCE SILVER CLOUD II Chassis No. LEV 864 Engine No. 54 BS Two tone silver with beige leather upholstery Engine: V8, overhead valve 6,230cc; Gearbox: four speed automatic; Suspension: front; coil, independent, rear; half-elliptic leaf springs; Brakes: four wheel combined hydraulic-mechanical, with servo assist. Left hand drive. By 1960 Rolls-Royce had reaffirmed its place as Britain's foremost automobile builder, amply fulfilling its slogan as "The Best Car in the World." The Silver Cloud II, while unchanged in outward appearance from its immediate predecessor, was powered with an entirely new eight cylinder engine that replaced the previous in-line 6 cylinder F-head. While in traditional Rolls-Royce fashion power outputs were not disclosed, the new engine was clearly larger and substantially more powerful than its predecessor. This engine was so robust and well designed that it has continued in production through the 90s, powering Rolls-Royce and Bentley automobiles. The Rolls-Royce on offer here is a fine example of the factory built body of the time. It is the first to carry the powerful new V8 while being the last to employ single headlamps, a feature which many Rolls- Royce enthusiasts regard with more favor than later four headlamp versions. Furnished with all of the traditional Rolls-Royce amenities and interior features it is complete with the finest leathers and woodwork. This example was purchased new in 1960 from the Jules Stein dealership in Kansas City and shipped direct to its new home in Bel Air, Los Angeles, California. Throughout its life this car has been based in the Los Angeles area, although well travelled and was even taken on a trip to Europe on one occasion. In 1983 the car passed to the owners wife, and she has cared for the car since then, moving to the Pasadena area until the present time. A large service history accompanies this lot and covers the period from 1984 until 1998. Generally this Silver Cloud II seems to represent a sound, original vehicle which has been well maintained over the years. Noticeable faults to the eye include some heat cracks below the woodwork veneer and some lifting of the same on the lower edges of the door mouldings. While the front upholstery has been replaced at some time and now has a nice patina, the rear is original and shows a little wear and would benefit from some saddle soap or hide food. This car has 90 of its small tools, all the large ones and its original manual. It comes equipped with air conditioning. On a recent test drive this elegant vehicle attracted admiring glances and respect from other motorists and public alike. It provides the feel of earlier vintage Rolls-Royce motor cars while at the same time providing the superior engineering from this bespoke manufacturer. WITHOUT RESERVE
