Introduced mid-summer 1927, the Fourth Series Packard Custom Eight was built on a 143-inch wheelbase chassis—hence the 4-43 series designation. The 4-43 was powered by Packard's magnificent 385cid (6.3L) L-head straight eight. Introduced in mid-1923, the big 109bhp nine-main-bearing engine had been substantially upgraded in 1926. Standard chassis equipment included mechanical 4-wheel brakes and a Bijur chassis lubrication system. Fourth Series Packard Eight production bridged over into calendar 1928 and would total 7,798 units in both Custom and Standard model lines. One especially attractive style found among the nine Custom Eight models cataloged was the 7-passenger Touring, which featured close-coupled open bodywork. The early history of this Packard is yet unknown, but it has been in single family ownership, largely untouched, since 1975. The vendor's father and grandfather purchased the car from Anithalee Alex, Jr from Roosevelt, GA in December of 1975, driving the car home to New Jersey and obtaining NJ registration within two weeks of receiving Anithalee's letter saying it was for sale—eager buyers indeed! In a letter on file, it is reported that the car is, "complete and in excellent condition" but that a small leak in radiator had been recently repaired. Mr Alex went further to note that the "the car could stand painting". A collector in his own right, Alex notes in his post script that 18 other cars were available at the time including three additional open Packards. He would later find a bit of fame for winning the lottery in Virgina by purchasing virtually every available ticket combination. The vendor's father attended many classic car shows purchasing original parts with the intent of restoring the car. With the death of his father, growth of his law practice, and his young son all drawing his attention, his interest in restoring the car faded. The Packard ended up on jack stands in the garage, awaiting its next day in the sun. While a host of spares, including an extra set of headlights, driving lights, and other miscellaneous parts, as well as a newly fabricated exhaust pipe, were assembled they were never installed. Carefully housed, the car did not move from its perch or see day light until it was pulled out for the photographs featured in this catalog. One of the first cars sought after as a 'collector' car, it is a CCCA Full Classic™ qualifying it for numerous events, tours and CARavans. Stunningly complete and never apart, this Packard is ready to move onto its first new keeper in nearly 40 years.
