Neil Armstrong: An original NASA colour offset photograph of the Apollo 11 astronaut Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin (b. 1930) standing on the Moon on July 21st 1969. In Aldrin's visor the creator of the image can be seen, Neil A. Armstrong (1930–2012), the leader of the expedition, as well as the lunar landing module. Photo size 35.5×27.5 cm. Frame size 43×33 cm. The American Apollo program was initiated in 1961, when President Kennedy stated that the US before the end of the decade would reach the Moon with a manned mission. This was a reaction towards the head start which the Soviet Union had obtained when launching Sputnik on October 4th 1957. Sputnik was the first satellite ever to be put in orbit around the Earth. In the late summer of 1969 NASA hit back. On July 21st Neil Armstrong became the first human to walk on the Moon. He did so with the words “That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind”. A few minutes later Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin followed.
