MUSIC. An extensive collections of autograph letters signed, quotations and fragments by composers, musicians and singers, including: BEETHOVEN, Ludwig van (1770-1827). Fragment of an autograph sketchleaf, [?1814], recto comprising approximately 5½ bars of the Elegischer Gesang op.118, including the words 'Kein auge wein ob des him[m]lischen Geistes He[imkehr]', verso comprising approximately 3 bars in pencil, possibly for cello; approximately 60 x 142mm (illustrated); ELGAR, Sir Edward (1857-1934). Autograph quotation signed, 2 bars from the 'Coronation Ode', with the text 'Land of hope and glory!' (illustrated); BERLIOZ, Hector (1803-1869). Autograph letter signed to 'Holmer', Paris, 29 January 1857, accepting the dedication of a study of Mozart's Requiem , mentioning a performance of L'Enfance de Christ , and discussing progress on 'mon énorme opéra': 'cela prend figure commes les stallactites [ sic ] qui se forment dans les grottes humides', 4 pages, 8vo ; MENDELSSOHN-BARTHOLDY, Felix (1809-1847). Autograph letter signed, 18 September 1835, in German, thanks for a stay in Leipzig, one page, 4to ; WEBER, Carl Maria von (1786-1826). Autograph letter signed, thanks for a letter and expressing his willingness to help, half page, 4to (torn across and repaired, with loss of legibility to one line); with letters by Charles Gounod (two), Franz Liszt, Jules Massenet, Nellie Melba, C. Hubert Parry (two), Camille Saint-Saens, C.V. Stanford (two), Arthur Sullivan, Charles Widor, S.S. Wesley (two) and many others, a number of the letters addressed to S.S. Wesley; and autograph quotations signed by C. Hubert Parry (from 'Blest Pair of Sirens'), John Philip Sousa, W.H. Squire, C.V. Stanford, R. Vaughan Williams (from 'The Vagabond', cut signature) and others; altogether approximately 420 letters, photographs and signatures and 19 autograph quotations , mounted and bound in alphabetical order in two albums, red morocco gilt. The op.118 Elegischer Gesang 'Sanft wie du lebtest' for SATB with accompaniment for string quartet or piano, was composed in 1814, though not published until 1826. (2)
