London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown, 1812. 4 o (275 x 220 mm). Engraved frontispiece and 8 plates, one colored (some spotting). Late 19th/early 20th-century blue half morocco (joints rubbed); marbled board slipcase (parted along folds). FIRST EDITION. This book was the first in English to tell of Brazil's gemmological wealth. The frontispiece plate has become a historically important visual documenting diamond washing. Mawe, a noted mineralogist, was the first eyewitness of the gold and diamond mines in Brazil.
