Manufacturer: Coultry Description: Extremely rare signed example of Coultry Pottery from 1880 with three dimensional leaf, vine and berry decoration done by an unknown artist. Coultry is most important in the generation of Cincinnati Limoges style pottery because of a visit in 1877 by Mary Louise McLaughlin to the plant and her efforts to duplicate the new underglaze work created by Haviland & Company in France. McLaughlin, Thomas Wheatley and Maria Longworth Nichols had first seen Haviland at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition in 1876 and McLaughlin was the first to create the Cincinnati version. Wheatley later worked at Coultry before starting his own company in 1880 and John Rettig and Albert Valentien taught decorating classes at Coultry that same year. This vase is incised “Coultry 1880” along with what may be artist’s marks and as such, is the first piece of signed Coultry we have seen in nearly 30 years. Yes, it’s rare. Height is 7 7/8 inches.
