Beschreibung:

Madeira "Violet"--1815 Newton, Gordon and Lewis Level: one bottom neck and one upper shoulder; damp stained label, recorked April 16, 1919 by William H. Fearing
2 bottles per lot
It is believed that Violet may have been a grape varietal of great quality. The following extract from A Treatise on the Vine: Embracing Its history from the earliest ages to the present day by William Robert Prince and William Prince (then Vice-President of the New York Horticultural Society) published in New York in 1830. "VIOLET MADEIRA. PR. CAT. NO. 108" This vine that I have received direct from Madeira, is one of the most hardy I have known...It is also very productive, and the fruit is of a pleasant vinous flavour...I consider it as a most valuable grape for vineyards, and I doubt not it is one of those which form the basis of the fine vineyards of Madeira."
