Rare studio photograph of Verrill, a white man charged but not convicted of murdering two white women. Verrill was accused as the murders' perpetrator by an African American man named Clifton Harris, who was subsequently executed for the crime. This execution, considered by many in Maine as a blatant act of racism, led in part to Maine's abolition of the death penalty in 1887.
