Chicago, New York, and San Francisco: Bedford, Clarke & Company, 1889. 3 volumes, 8vo. Title to each section, numerous steel engraved plates; some offsetting to titles, contemporary ownership inscriptions to titles. Original publisher's blue cloth, covers and spines gilt, top edges gilt, patterned endpapers; some rubbing to extremities, some rubbing to endpapers. First edition, "based on Herndon's intimate, first-hand knowledge, this will always be the most authoritative single source for Lincoln's early period" (Howes H-440).
