Engraved document boldly signed ("Abraham Lincoln") as President, countersigned by Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles, Washington, D.C., 21 February 1863, 1 page, folio, PRINTED ON FINE PARCHMENT, orange papered seal of the United States at lower center, elaborately engraved (by the American Bank Note Company) with an American eagle perched on a rock with two sailing ships in background, large calligraphic legend "President of the United States of America," and, at bottom, a group of mermaids, tritons and winged horses above a group of crossed flags, cannon and other military paraphernalia, accomplished in manuscript, President Lincoln and Secretary Welles appoint Charles S. Norton a "Lieutenant Commander in the Navy on the Active List" -- GRANT, ULYSSES S., President . Engraved document signed ("U.S. Grant"), countersigned by Sec. of the Navy George M. Robeson, Washington, D.C., 9 July 1870, 1 page, folio, PRINTED ON FINE PARCHMENT, promoting Norton to Commander -- MCKINLEY, WILLIAM, President. Engraved document signed ("William McKinley"), countersigned by Sec. of the Navy John D. Long, Washington, D.C., 1 February 1898, 1 page, folio, PRINTED ON FINE PARCHMENT, appointing Norton a Rear Admiral -- [U.S. NAVAL ACADEMY]. Engraved document signed by 10 officials, including Superintendent L.M.
