This group developed a distinctive, modern style through a radically anti-traditional artistic vision and invited not only artists but also patrons to join their cause, serving as a bridge between art and society. One of these supporters was Dr Rosa Schapire (1874-1954) a distinguished and prolific patron, collector and critic in early twentieth-century German Expressionism. Born into a wealthy Jewish family in Poland and having studied art history at Zurich and Heidelberg Universities, the emphasis in her collection was on the oeuvre of Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, who depicted her in several portraits, and in 1921 carried out an important decorative plan for her living room in Hamburg where the artist designed a wide range of lifestyle objects as furniture, carpets, tablecloths and cushions. Another patron and member of the Die Brücke group was Elsa Delbanco (1876 - 1972) who, along with her husband, became one of the earlies
