Jean Petit's large woodcut device (Haebler IV, Renouard 883) on title-page, 2 full-page woodcuts, of a bishop writing at a lectern and of a scholar. White-on-black criblé woodcut initials. Printed side-notes. Early paragraph marks in the index only. (Wormhole through first 2 quires.) Modern brown calf, preserving a few deckle edges. Provenance : Ex bibliotheca ... Augustini (17th or 18th-century inscription on title) -- first 4 leaves of the Justinus densely annotated by a 19th or 20th-century student of Latin. A page-for-page reprint of an undated Marchant/Petit edition printed ca. 1506, which used an earlier version of Petit's device. Brigitte Moreau dated this edition to circa 1509 on the basis of the device. Jean Marchant who began printing in 1504, continued his uncle Guy Marchant's association with Jean Petit Harvard/Walsh 3631c; Moreau I, 328; Goff J-623.
